Host Department

Department of Community Medicine

Established on 1st August 1949, originally as the Department of Hygiene and Public Health, the department has a rich legacy in the field of medical education and public health. In 1952, the department played a pioneering role in initiating the BCG immunisation programme and participated in the statewide smallpox vaccination programme in Madhya Bharat. In 1953, Dr. Kolekar, then Deputy Director of Health Services of Madhya Bharat, became Professor after attending the International Planned Parenthood Conference in Bombay. By 1954, it was formally redesignated as the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine.

The department holds a place of special academic significance, having been associated with eminent scholars, including Dr. J. E. Park, whose contributions left a lasting impact on medical education in India. The department runs OPD-based public health services, including the Anti-Rabies Clinic, NCD Screening Clinic, and Tobacco Cessation Centre. It has also become one of the four state dispersal centres for the HPV vaccination campaign. With a strong foundation in teaching and research, the department continues its legacy of dedicated service and excellence in public health practice. For our esteemed guests, Gwalior offers an atmosphere that inspires reflection, learning, and dialogue, set against a backdrop of timeless heritage.
